The Department of Communication facilitates opportunities for students and faculty to develop and apply functional knowledge of relevant theory—necessary for successful storytelling and effective creation and management of meaning in a variety of contexts.
The Department of Communication consists of two dynamic programs: Communication Studies and Mass Communication. The goal of the Department is to provide students with an excellent undergraduate education and prepare them for a wide variety of careers in business, teaching, journalism, television and film.
Formed in 1925, the Department of Communication is one of the oldest college communication programs in the Southeast. Since Fall 2017, the Department has been housed in the state-of-the-art Strong Hall, home to our HD television studio, multiple computer labs, editing suites, and classroom spaces. Strong Hall gives Mass Communication students hands-on experience with industry-leading production equipment and provides our Communication Studies and Public Relations students innovative, collaborative learning spaces.
Communication Studies
Our two time National Communication Association Rex Mix Program of Excellence Award winning program emphasizes undergraduate courses designed to develop ethical and engaged citizens who are prepared to use appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication skills to effectively create and manage meaning as leaders in their professions, community, and world.
Mass Communication
The Mass Communication Program seeks to educate students not only in the finest traditions of both journalism and broadcasting, but to prepare them for the ever-changing information age. This happens both within and beyond the classroom, developing and applying the creative, aesthetic and technical skills essential to all forms of multimedia communication. Scholarships
The University of Montevallo offers scholarships for Communication Studies and Mass Communication majors. A special application must be completed to apply for the following scholarships by the March 1st deadline.
